zone sounds

I started using my new computer a couple days ago, and at first everything was fine here on the zone. But yesterday, the zone sounds stopped. When I get a quicknote I don't hear the little ditty that lets you know you just got a qn. When I log on for the first time after midnight, I didn't hear the sound you hear your first time logging on that day. I did hear it yesterday morning but not today, so the sounds stopped working for me sometime yesterday. Same thing when I'm playing anagrams. I don't hear the sound you normally hear to let you know you picked a valid word. I also don't hear the sounds you are supposed to hear if you typed an invalid word or retyped one you have already typed.

Anyone know what I should do?

Hi Becky.

Question is, are other sounds working?
Do you hear the music thingy when windows starts up?
Can you play music on your computer?
Can you hear jaws talk?

If you answered "yes" to each of these questions, then, it's probably a zone setting.
I think there is a checkbox in your profile for hearing sounds. Make sure that is checked.

Otherwise, uh, well, I don't know. Maybe others have ideas.

Did windows update internet explorer?
Because you have a new machine it will be updating for a few days, so when this happens things change.
If IE was updated, you have to reset the add on that makes these sounds play.
Do you know how to handle your add ons for Explorer?

I turned on the sounds just now, so I could explain.
My laptop updated to IE 11, but I don't care about the sounds, so didn't bother.
I made sure the box in my account here was checked.
Soon as I did that and refreshed, the IE ask me if I wanted to allow Windows Media player sounds. Alt N takes me to that section as you know.
I said I did, and now they work.
If you miss the message.
Press alt T. Arrow down to Manage add-ons and hit enter.
You hear toolbars and extenchens.
I tab and hear currently loaded add ons, but I than press the down arrow once and back up so I could see all add ons.
Make sure the audio MP3 control is set to enabled.
Sounds play. Smile.
Now I'm going to uncheck that box. Lol

If I were a betting guy (oh yeah, I am) if I had any money to bet, I would bet that Wayne has hit the nail on the head.

I do have the checkbox checked in my account settings to allow sounds. I do hear JAWS and all other sounds. It's just the Zone sounds I'm not hearing. I'll see if I can decipherWayne's instructions now, but given my luck trying to follow his instructions for Outlook 2013, I'm not holding my breath.

Wayne, I already have IE 11. The funny thing is, sometimes I get pop-up messages asking me if I want to update to 11. Why would it do that when that is the version I have? I even got a message about updating to IE 10 once, which is ridiculous since that wouldn't be an update, it would be a downgrade.

Wayne I followed your instructions but not finding anything about MP3. I did see something that said Mediaplayer being enabled, but that was it.

OK, just to wrap this up, Wayne and I talked through private qn's, and he helped me figure it out. I was getting periodic messages while playing anagrams that said something about this website wanting to add on media player. He told me to hit alt N whenever I got that message. I did that and pressed spacebar on allow, and problem solved.

Thanks to everyone who has been trying to help me with this and other issues. This is one of the reasons I love the zone. I can't afford a private tutor, and my local services for the blind only wants to help people who are looking for a job or already have jobs with technology issues, so I really have nowhere else to turn other than here and sometimes one list that I am on. SO between a helpful person on one of those lists and Wayne, John, and Bob here on the zone, I think I'm good to go.

Always my pleasure.
Because I do this all day, I sometimes assume things that aren't there, so I might miss explaining.
Some issue require hands on.
Cool on the sounds.
